Benfica Lisbon has expressed significant interest in acquiring the 31-year-old midfielder, João Palhinha. The most decorated club in Portugal is reportedly preparing a substantial offer of 20 million euros, with an additional 5 million euros in potential bonuses. This proposal from Benfica appears to align perfectly with FC Bayern’s valuation, as the German giants are seeking 25 million euros for Palhinha’s permanent transfer.

  • Should this transfer materialize, it would undoubtedly generate considerable buzz in Portuguese football circles. Palhinha honed his skills at Sporting CP, Benfica’s fierce local rival, where he made 95 official appearances. Interestingly, ahead of a UEFA Champions League clash between Bayern Munich and Benfica in autumn 2024, Palhinha described the encounter as a “special match.” He also surprisingly revealed that despite his history with Sporting, many of his close family members were “Benfica supporters.”

The midfielder, who has openly indicated his willingness to move to the red side of Lisbon, would also be reunited with coach Marco Silva at Benfica. The two previously worked together during Palhinha’s tenure at Fulham in the Premier League, prior to his move to Munich.

  • João Palhinha’s journey since joining FC Bayern in 2024 for a significant fee.

João Palhinha officially joined FC Bayern in 2024 in a substantial deal worth 51 million euros. Recent speculation suggested that his former club, Sporting CP, also showed interest in his return. However, financial constraints reportedly prevented the Lisbon club from making a viable offer. Beyond Portugal, Italian giants Juventus Turin and AC Milan are now rumored to be monitoring the situation surrounding the midfielder.

Despite the hefty transfer fee, Palhinha struggled to secure a regular starting spot at Bayern Munich. He featured in only 25 official matches for the Bavarian club, primarily coming off the bench. Last summer, he was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for a fee of 5 million euros. However, after a challenging season where the London club narrowly avoided relegation, Tottenham opted not to activate the agreed-upon purchase option.

If the move to Benfica proceeds, Palhinha would become the fifth player loaned out by Bayern this summer to be permanently transferred. This follows the departures of Alexander Nübel to Besiktas, Daniel Peretz to Southampton, Maurice Krattenmacher to Elversberg, and Jonah Kusi-Asare to Fulham.
