João Palhinha officially joined FC Bayern in 2024 in a substantial deal worth 51 million euros. Recent speculation suggested that his former club, Sporting CP, also showed interest in his return. However, financial constraints reportedly prevented the Lisbon club from making a viable offer. Beyond Portugal, Italian giants Juventus Turin and AC Milan are now rumored to be monitoring the situation surrounding the midfielder.
Despite the hefty transfer fee, Palhinha struggled to secure a regular starting spot at Bayern Munich. He featured in only 25 official matches for the Bavarian club, primarily coming off the bench. Last summer, he was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for a fee of 5 million euros. However, after a challenging season where the London club narrowly avoided relegation, Tottenham opted not to activate the agreed-upon purchase option.
If the move to Benfica proceeds, Palhinha would become the fifth player loaned out by Bayern this summer to be permanently transferred. This follows the departures of Alexander Nübel to Besiktas, Daniel Peretz to Southampton, Maurice Krattenmacher to Elversberg, and Jonah Kusi-Asare to Fulham.
