Chadian political figures Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo, previously sentenced to an eight-year prison term as members of the former Political Actors’ Consultation Group (GCAP), have been granted provisional release due to pressing health issues.
The decision to release them temporarily stems directly from the critical health condition of both individuals, as confirmed by a legal representative from the collective defending the former GCAP members.
The N’Djamena public prosecutor’s office issued the order for their release, citing both Me Bidi Valentin and Bombay Kelo’s advanced age and their struggle with various chronic illnesses as the primary justification for this humanitarian measure.
It is important to note, however, that this is not a permanent liberation but a temporary measure.
For other individuals convicted in the same case, legal efforts are presently underway to secure similar provisional releases for those suffering from health complications.
The objective is to ensure that other ailing detainees can also benefit from temporary freedom on compassionate medical grounds.
Furthermore, the legal team representing the former GCAP leadership has formally appealed the initial judgment.
The appeal against the ruling has been filed, and the legal team is now awaiting the case’s review by the N’Djamena Court of Appeal.
The leaders of the former Political Actors’ Consultation Group (GCAP) were originally convicted on May 8th, receiving an eight-year firm prison sentence. The charges brought against them included rebellion, criminal association, and the unlawful possession of war weapons.
