A decade after his initial departure, Lucas Digne is set to make a stunning comeback to Paris Saint-Germain, catching the football world off guard. The French international, currently playing for Aston Villa, will reunite with his former teammates in the capital, marking a significant shift in the club’s defensive strategy.
From Barcelona to Paris: A Homecoming for Digne
The move comes as a surprise to many, especially considering Lucas Digne‘s previous stint at FC Barcelona, where he played alongside Ousmane Dembélé during the 2016-2017 season. The two have maintained a close relationship, which played a role in Digne’s decision to rejoin the Ligue 1 giants. With a reported release clause of €10 million set to be activated post-World Cup, the timing of this transfer aligns perfectly with the club’s plans.
PSG’s Secret Negotiations Pay Off
While the broader football community is still absorbing the news, the details of the deal were carefully kept under wraps. PSG‘s sporting director, Luis Campos, spearheaded the negotiations, which began nearly a month before the official announcement. Initially, the club had considered younger options, but Digne’s experience and familiarity with the team’s tactical setup ultimately won the day. His role? To provide seasoned backup to rising star Nuno Mendes, ensuring depth and leadership in the squad.
A Warm Reception from Teammates
The news was shared with PSG‘s French contingent during the World Cup in the United States, where Lucas Digne joined his international colleagues. Among them were Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, and Ousmane Dembélé—the latter of whom greeted the news with playful banter, reflecting the camaraderie within the group. This seamless integration into the locker room highlights Digne’s ability to adapt and thrive in high-pressure environments.
