Pastef leader stresses self-reliance and future electoral strategy
During a recent Senegal tour in the Diourbel region, Ousmane Sonko, head of the Pastef movement, reaffirmed his party’s commitment to financial autonomy and outlined a bold vision for Senegal’s political future. The visits to Touba and Sadio served as platforms to reinforce Pastef’s core principles and address mounting expectations from supporters and critics alike.
A funding model built on grassroots commitment
In Touba, Sonko took the opportunity to clarify how Pastef operates without state subsidies, a stance that has drawn both praise and controversy. Addressing concerns about the surge in membership card sales, he emphasized that the party’s financial health stems entirely from member contributions.
« Pastef does not rely on public funds to sustain its activities. That would be against our values, » Sonko declared, underscoring the party’s transparent and self-sustaining model. With a touch of humor, he highlighted the overwhelming demand: « By mid-afternoon, all 13,000 membership cards had already been sold. We had to place an urgent reorder from Dakar. »
He urged supporters to stay focused on the party’s long-term goals, warning against distractions. « Avoid unnecessary confrontations. If Senegal achieves peace, Pastef will dominate every election. No vote will slip through its grasp, » he declared with confidence.
Revisiting the foundations of political change
In Sadio, Sonko adopted a more reflective tone, revisiting the political shift that reshaped Senegal’s leadership in March 2024. He highlighted his pivotal role in steering the movement toward Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the substitute candidate after his own disqualification, framing it as a historic victory rooted in legitimacy and collective will.
While acknowledging public sentiment, Sonko subtly questioned whether the current administration remains aligned with the original commitments that defined the movement’s rise. His remarks hinted at a growing disconnect between the party’s ideals and the actions of those now in power.
2026 and 2029: critical milestones ahead
Looking beyond recent triumphs, Sonko framed the upcoming 2026 and 2029 elections as decisive phases in consolidating Pastef’s political project. He asserted that 80% of the movement’s political battle had already been won under his leadership, positioning himself as the guardian of its founding vision.
« The journey is far from over. These elections will determine whether Senegal fully embraces the change we envisioned, » he stated, rallying the base to remain steadfast in their mission.
