Senegal politics: former mp maimouna sene criticizes sonko’s judicial populism

In a sharp rebuttal delivered on the floor of the National Assembly, former legislator Maïmouna Sène, a senior figure in the Alliance Pour la République (APR), accused Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of deploying what she termed « judicial populism » as a distraction from the country’s pressing economic challenges.

Accountability vs. Political Theatre

Addressing the Prime Minister directly, Maïmouna Sène acknowledged the principle of accountability as legitimate but cautioned against its misuse as a political communication tool. She argued that while the government must uphold transparency, this should not come at the expense of addressing Senegal’s core economic priorities—inflation control, job creation, and economic revival. Sène emphasized that the Senegalese people elected their leaders not to wage « witch hunts » or settle personal scores, but to deliver tangible progress.

Calls for Substance Over Rhetoric

She went further, urging Ousmane Sonko to demonstrate accountability within his own ranks before targeting political opponents. Maïmouna Sène insisted that empty threats and inflammatory language should give way to concrete actions. In her words, « Charity begins at home. Look within your own camp first before pointing fingers elsewhere. »

Her remarks underscore growing tensions within Senegal’s political landscape, where economic frustrations are increasingly intersecting with governance debates. As the nation grapples with rising living costs and unemployment, the exchange highlights a widening gap between political rhetoric and the urgent needs of the Senegalese people.
