Sonko urges reforms to enhance African Union Parliament’s impact

The Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, met with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, President of the Executive Committee of the Pan-African Parliament, during the 85th session of the African Union Parliament’s Executive Committee. The high-level discussion, held on June 4, centered on strengthening the institution’s operational framework to better address the continent’s evolving challenges.

The meeting explored ways to bolster the Pan-African Parliament’s efficiency and alignment with the African Union’s broader policy objectives. Sonko emphasized the need for structural reforms to amplify the Parliament’s influence on continental governance, advocating for tighter synchronization between the Parliament’s recommendations and those of the African Union.

Key priorities discussed included enhancing decision-making processes and ensuring that institutional actions reflect the collective aspirations of African nations. The proposed reforms aim to create a more cohesive and impactful parliamentary body capable of driving meaningful change across Africa.
