Tchad denies UN claims of civilian casualties in lake Chad strikes
The Chadian government has strongly refuted allegations from the United Nations Human Rights Office regarding civilian casualties during military strikes in the Lake Chad Basin targeting Boko Haram positions. Speaking to the press in N’Djamena, the government’s spokesperson and Minister of Communication, Gassim Chérif Mahamat, dismissed these claims as baseless attempts to undermine the credibility of Chad’s armed forces.
According to the minister, the accusations are part of a deliberate smear campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Chadian military. He emphasized that Chad’s armed forces remain fully committed to combating terrorism across the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, a region plagued by recurring armed group attacks for years.
The government maintains that military operations are conducted with strict adherence to international humanitarian law. It insists that every precaution is taken to minimize collateral damage and protect civilians during airstrikes targeting Boko Haram positions.
This rebuttal follows the release of a UN Human Rights Office report suggesting significant civilian losses from recent aerial operations carried out by Chadian forces in the area. The findings have reignited debates over the conduct of military operations in this volatile region, where clashes between security forces and armed groups remain frequent.
N’Djamena has forcefully contested these claims, arguing they lack sufficient evidence. The authorities assert that the country’s defense and security forces continue to play a pivotal role in stabilizing the region, standing on the front lines against terrorist threats.
The government has called for a measured and responsible assessment of the security situation while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding civilian lives. It has also urged for enhanced international cooperation to better coordinate efforts against extremist groups active in the Lake Chad Basin.
Context and ongoing security challenges
The Lake Chad Basin remains a hotspot for insurgent activities, with Boko Haram and other factions frequently launching attacks. Chadian authorities maintain that their military operations are necessary to curb these threats and ensure regional stability.
In this tense diplomatic climate, N’Djamena has reiterated its determination to continue operations against Boko Haram, defending the professionalism and legitimacy of its armed forces amid complex security conditions.
