French international **Adrien Rabiot**, a former **PSG** academy product, signed with **Olympique de Marseille** in the summer of 2024 after his contract with **Juventus** expired. This move came as a surprise, especially since the midfielder reportedly had more prestigious options available, a fact that has only recently come to light.

The French international, who began his career at **PSG**, had previously spent five seasons with **Juventus** from 2019 to 2024. Upon the expiration of his contract, **Rabiot** chose to join **Olympique de Marseille**, a move that surprised many considering other top European clubs were reportedly vying for his signature with more enticing propositions.
Ancelotti had eyes on him for Real Madrid
A significant revelation from Spain sheds light on the surprising nature of **Rabiot**’s decision to join **Olympique de Marseille**. It was particularly astonishing given that the Phocéen club was not participating in any European competitions at the time. Despite this, the French international opted for **Marseille**, even though a move to **Real Madrid** was a distinct possibility. Spanish journalist **José Félix Diaz** of AS highlighted on X (formerly Twitter) that on August 30, 2024, when **Rabiot** was still unattached, **Carlo Ancelotti**, then coach of **Real Madrid**, expressed a clear desire to sign him. However, **Rabiot** ultimately chose to bypass the Spanish capital, making his way to the Vélodrome instead.
“I went for it with audacity”
The architect behind **Adrien Rabiot**’s arrival at **Olympique de Marseille** was none other than **Medhi Benatia**, the club’s former football director. Benatia recounted the audacious move, explaining that **Rabiot**, a free agent after his contract with **Juventus**, represented a “joker” transfer opportunity. Despite having numerous options and not reaching an agreement elsewhere, Benatia decided to take a bold approach. “I went for it with audacity,” he revealed. Knowing **Rabiot**’s deep passion for the sport, Benatia made the call, anticipating a rejection but with nothing to lose. To his surprise, **Rabiot** responded within 24 hours, cutting short the initially allotted 48-hour reflection period. **Rabiot** reportedly told Benatia, “It’s how you spoke to me about football. It’s good, I want to come.” This personal connection and Benatia’s direct appeal ultimately sealed the deal for **Marseille**.
