African energy summit highlights Togo’s push for nuclear-powered growth

Kigali, May 20, 2026 — The corridors of the Kigali Convention Centre buzzed with urgency as African leaders, civil nuclear experts, investors, and international partners gathered for the second edition of the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA 2026) on May 19. The summit, themed around reimagining the continent’s energy future, underscored a growing consensus: Africa must move beyond merely addressing today’s energy shortages to investing in technologies that will power its economic transformation tomorrow.

Among the prominent voices at the event, Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé championed a bold vision for energy sovereignty. His message was clear—African nations can no longer afford to react to energy crises; they must proactively shape their energy destinies to meet the demands of industrialization, demographic growth, and the digital economy. The stakes are high: without reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy, Africa’s industrial ambitions risk stalling before they gain momentum.
