Violent clashes erupt in northern Burkina Faso
Northern Burkina Faso has once again been rocked by fierce fighting, with Islamist militants claiming control of a key military position near Gorbla, close to the city of Ouahigouya. The Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist organization, announced via its propaganda channels that it had overrun a defensive outpost manned by civilian militias backing the national army.
Morning assault leads to tactical gains
The attack, launched at dawn, targeted a strategic military post defended by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP). According to the GSIM, the assault overwhelmed the defenders after intense combat. The group also reported seizing a substantial cache of weapons, ammunition, and several military vehicles.
While independent verification of casualty figures remains elusive, the militants asserted that the defenders suffered “multiple losses” during the operation.
Gorbla: a critical security nexus
