The Parti des peuples africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) is facing internal turbulence as it approaches its first ordinary congress, scheduled for May 14–15, 2026 in Abidjan. In an official statement released on May 13, the party’s leadership, led by President Laurent Gbagbo, announced disciplinary sanctions against 61 cadres and members accused of “indiscipline.”

The sanctions were imposed under Council Strategy and Policy (CSP) Decision No. 02-2026/CSP/PPA-CI/KKJ/07052026, approved by the party’s presidency on May 13. The leadership framed these measures as essential to maintaining internal discipline and ensuring smooth preparations for the upcoming congress.

The disciplinary actions fall into three tiers. Forty-four cadres face an 18-month suspension, 10 cadres are suspended for 12 months, and seven cadres receive a six-month suspension. During these periods, those penalized are barred not only from participating in party activities but also from running in internal elections.

With the congress looming, the move highlights the leadership’s determination to assert authority and consolidate support around the party’s official line. However, the scale of the suspensions has sparked speculation about underlying tensions within the PPA-CI, including strategic disagreements and leadership disputes.

Internal reactions and future implications

While the leadership has framed the sanctions as a necessary step to uphold discipline, critics argue they reflect deeper divisions within the party. The absence of public statements from the affected members further fuels uncertainty about the party’s internal dynamics. As the congress approaches, the disciplinary measures are poised to reshape internal power balances and could significantly influence the party’s direction.

At a critical juncture in its organizational history, the PPA-CI finds itself at a crossroads—balancing the need for unity with the challenges of internal dissent.
