Gabon advances marine conservation with public consultations on zoning plan

Libreville — The Gabonese government is actively engaging coastal communities in a series of public consultations to finalize the National Marine Space Zoning Plan. Teams from the Ministry of the Blue Economy have been touring key fishing hubs, including Port-Gentil, to present the project and gather input from local stakeholders.

The initiative aims to establish a balanced framework that protects critical marine ecosystems while ensuring sustainable access to resources for traditional fishermen, women fishmongers, and seafood processors. These consultations are part of the broader Blue Obligations program, which positions Gabon as a global leader in innovative financing for marine conservation.

Collaborative approach to marine protection

The zoning plan represents a technical milestone in the country’s commitment to harmonize environmental preservation with economic development. By the deadline of July 19, officials will map out traditional fishing zones, migratory corridors, and climate-resilient areas across the Estuaire, Nyanga, and Ogooué-Maritime provinces.

This participatory process ensures that the finalized plan reflects the needs of both conservationists and local communities. Once validated by decision-making bodies, the zoning framework will serve as a blueprint for safeguarding Gabon’s marine biodiversity for future generations.

Key highlights:

  • Consultations target artisanal fishermen, women fishmongers, and seafood processors
  • Focus on protecting mangroves and other critical habitats
  • Balancing conservation with livelihoods for coastal populations
