High-level Morocco-France talks in Rabat seek to elevate bilateral relations

As our correspondent in Rabat reports, this high-stakes gathering between Moroccan and French delegations marks a pivotal moment in the warming diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Both the Moroccan and French prime ministers emphasized the significance of this meeting during their opening statements this Thursday morning, highlighting the potential to transform the bilateral relationship.
First established in 1996 under King Hassan II, these high-level exchanges were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Paris. Those challenging years now feel like a distant memory.
A fresh chapter in bilateral cooperation
For Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, the strengthened partnership finalized during the French president’s state visit in 2024 has ushered in « a fresh chapter in bilateral relations » and set an ambitious new course for the future.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu echoed this sentiment, describing the talks as a « turning point » as both nations seek to « elevate their bilateral relationship to a new level ».
Over a dozen cooperation agreements signed
Earlier bilateral discussions between French and Moroccan ministers laid the groundwork for today’s plenary session. During a private meeting, Lecornu and Akhannouch addressed critical areas including security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts.
Lecornu also reiterated discussions about a potential royal visit to France, which could culminate in the signing of a new bilateral treaty to redefine the Paris-Rabat partnership.
Following the plenary, more than a dozen cooperation instruments were finalized—including conventions, declarations of intent, and partnership agreements.
