Gabon ends its long-standing fishing pact with the european union

Gabon has officially decided against renewing its Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) with the European Union (EU), bringing an end to the pact upon its expiration on June 28, 2026.

This cooperative arrangement, initially established in 2007, saw multiple extensions over the years, with its most recent renewal occurring in 2021. Over a five-year period, the agreement reportedly contributed 17 billion CFA francs to the Gabonese treasury.

The definitive move to discontinue the agreement with the EU was first set in motion during the Council of Ministers meeting in June 2025. This significant policy shift was spearheaded by transitional president Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, marking a pivotal departure after 19 years of collaborative efforts in the fisheries sector with the European bloc.

From Libreville’s perspective, the financial returns generated by the agreement were deemed insufficient, especially when weighed against the substantial value of catches harvested within Gabonese maritime zones. The Gabonese government has consistently expressed its dissatisfaction with the modest revenue levels derived from the partnership.

Moving forward, the Gabonese government is now committed to prioritizing the local transformation of tuna. This strategic direction aims to stimulate job creation, attract essential industrial investments, and significantly enhance the added value generated within the national territory.
