Gabon is actively engaged in technical preparation and negotiation phases with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to establish a new framework for economic cooperation. This steadfast commitment ensures that dialogue with its long-standing partner remains robust. Officials confirm that discussions between the Gabonese government and the IMF continue consistently, characterized by a constructive and responsible atmosphere.
Following the spring meetings held last April, Gabonese representatives and IMF teams have maintained regular exchanges via videoconference. These sessions adhere to a jointly agreed schedule, with a primary focus on crucial technical work. On July 2, 2026, a significant meeting took place in Washington at the IMF headquarters. Thierry Minko, Gabon’s Minister of Economy, Finance, Debt, and Public Participations, also responsible for combating the high cost of living, held a cordial discussion with the IMF’s Africa Director. The Director was accompanied by his colleagues, including Aliona Cebotari, the mission chief for Gabon.
The administration further clarifies that these discussions are progressing according to a mutually established and coherent roadmap. This strategic plan is structured around several key pillars: the amended finance law for 2026, the macroeconomic and budgetary framework projected for the 2027-2029 period, the continuous consolidation of economic, financial, and budgetary data, and the meticulous preparation for subsequent stages of engagement with the Fund.
