Infantino’s firm warning: world cup teams face severe penalties for abandoning matches

Après Sénégal–Maroc, Infantino avertit avant le Mondial : « Toute équipe qui quitte le terrain sera…»

Several months after the Africa Cup of Nations final, where the Senegal national football team secured a 1-0 victory against the Morocco national football team, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a significant caution to national squads. This important announcement arrives just weeks before the highly anticipated commencement of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The CAN final itself was marked by considerable refereeing controversy. Congolese official Jean-Jacques Ndella controversially awarded a penalty to Morocco, shortly after a goal scored by Senegal had been disallowed. In response, the Senegalese players, led by their coach Pape Thiaw, temporarily walked off the pitch for approximately ten minutes before ultimately resuming play.

Despite the contentious interlude, the encounter eventually concluded with the Lions of Teranga clinching the title, thanks to a decisive goal from Pape Guèye, earning Senegal their second continental championship.

With the Mondial 2026 on the horizon, Gianni Infantino has taken the opportunity to reaffirm the stringent nature of regulations concerning team conduct during matches. He stated unequivocally: “From the World Cup onwards, any team that decides to abandon the pitch in protest against refereeing decisions will be shown red cards and will forfeit the match!”

This clear and firm message aims to prevent any similar incidents from occurring during the forthcoming global football showcase.
