Mali-Algeria thaw: Bamako restores air links and ambassador exchange

The Republic of Mali has taken a decisive step to mend strained relations with Algeria by restoring full diplomatic representation and reopening its airspace to Algerian flights.

In an official statement released today, Mali’s transitional government announced the imminent return of its ambassador to Algiers, emphasizing the move as part of efforts to “revitalize cooperation and friendship” between the two nations. The communiqué confirmed that the ambassador, currently stationed in Bamako, will resume duties in the Algerian capital within days.

Equally significant was the announcement that Mali has reopened its airspace to all Algerian aircraft—both civilian and military—operating flights to and from Algeria. This reciprocal gesture follows Algeria’s own decision earlier this week to lift restrictions on Malian air traffic, signaling a clear thaw in bilateral tensions.

The swift sequence of these reciprocal measures underscores a mutual commitment to restoring stability and constructive dialogue between Bamako and Algiers. Analysts view this development as a positive indicator for regional security and economic collaboration in the Sahel.
