According to the party, these funds were diverted for purposes entirely unrelated to the peace initiative in the Casamance region.
Allegations of financial impropriety in Casamance peace funds
In a formal statement released on August 25, 2026, the Parti Kiiraay Les Patriotes Républicains directly challenged the management of special funds earmarked for fostering peace in Casamance. The political entity asserts that Ousmane Sonko authorized expenditures totaling 3.7 billion FCFA from the “Jamm pour la Paix en Casamance” account over the specified period, yet failed to provide transparent and detailed justifications for how these substantial sums were utilized.
The party further highlighted that the former Prime Minister reportedly cited the acquisition of new vehicles and the renovation of the administrative building as explanations for a portion of these expenses. However, Kiiraay maintains that such operations fall outside the designated scope of the fund, which was specifically established to support peace efforts and stability in the troubled Casamance region.
For the opposition party, this situation raises critical questions regarding the consistency of the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. The party declared, “Transparency is a variable geometry,” emphasizing that all public funds should be subject to the same rigorous demands for justification, regardless of the official responsible for their management.
This public denunciation by the Parti Kiiraay Les Patriotes Républicains follows a recent ruling by the Constitutional Council. The Council invalidated a law, previously passed by the PASTEF-dominated National Assembly, that sought to control special funds. As of this report, former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has not yet issued a response to these accusations made by the ruling party.
