Mali drone strike leaves 10 civilians dead at wedding convoy

Ten young civilians lost their lives in a tragic incident on Sunday in the village of Téné, located in Mali’s San region. They were preparing to celebrate a traditional group wedding when a military drone strike mistakenly targeted their procession of motorcycles.

The attack occurred against a backdrop of heightened security tensions in the country. Just days earlier, coordinated offensives by armed rebels on April 25–26 had escalated violence across the region, further straining an already fragile situation.

when celebration turns to grief

« Ten of our children were killed by gunfire whose origin remains unknown, » said a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity. « What was meant to be a moment of joy for the village turned into profound sorrow. »

The strike hit a convoy of motorcycles traveling together, a sight that may have drawn the attention of drone operators. Security sources confirmed the operation, stating that « a group of villagers was preparing the second edition of this traditional collective wedding, a major cultural event for the community. »

Local officials also corroborated the toll, with one elected representative declaring, « A wedding was about to take place when drones killed at least ten civilians. It’s truly a tragedy. »

tragedy in a crisis-ridden region

The drone strike unfolded in a context of escalating insecurity, following large-scale coordinated attacks in late April. These included offensives by jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Tuareg-led rebel factions, intensifying the strain on Mali’s already fragile security landscape.

This incident underscores the growing risks faced by civilians in conflict zones, particularly during cultural and community gatherings. The loss of young lives at what should have been a joyous occasion has left the region in mourning.
