Mali’s junta offers bounties on top jihadist and rebel leaders

Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former Tuareg rebel turned Malian diplomat, now leads the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), established in 2017. His name resonates across the Sahel as the most hunted figure in the region, facing United Nations sanctions, a U.S. terrorism designation, and an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Deadly attacks spark urgent government response

On April 25 and 26, coordinated assaults by JNIM jihadists—allied with the predominantly Tuareg Azauad Liberation Front (FLA)—slammed into Mali, targeting vital positions held by the Bamako-based junta. The offensive, unprecedented in scale, left the country’s Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, dead at 47 in a suicide bombing. A central figure in the military leadership, his assassination marked a critical blow to the regime’s stability.

Rewards announced for capture of key militants

In an official broadcast aired Thursday, the Malian government unveiled bounties for the capture or elimination of seven high-profile individuals, including:

  • Iyad Ag Ghaly (JNIM leader) — reward undisclosed
  • Amadou Kouffa (JNIM commander) — €2.2 million
  • Alghabass Ag Intalla (FLA figurehead)
  • Bilal Ag Cherif (FLA leader)

The announcement emphasized the government’s commitment to combating terrorism and safeguarding national security. Authorities pledged financial compensation to anyone providing verified, actionable intelligence leading to the arrest or neutralization of these suspects, citing their alleged roles in planning and executing attacks that endangered civilians and infrastructure.

A decade of unrelenting insecurity

Since 2012, Mali has grappled with a severe security crisis, fueled by the violent campaigns of JNIM, the Islamic State affiliate, and intercommunal criminal factions. The latest surge in hostilities underscores the urgent challenge facing Bamako as it struggles to restore order in a fracturing nation.
