Bournemouth vs Manchester City

The visitors never truly settled into their rhythm, perhaps unsettled by the intense media speculation surrounding the imminent departure of their Catalan manager after a decade at the Etihad, or simply fatigued from their FA Cup final victory over Chelsea just days prior. Regardless, their performance in the first half was well below their usual standards, culminating in them conceding the opening goal to a superb strike from Eli Junior Kroupi in the 39th minute.

Guardiola attempted to shift the momentum shortly after halftime, making a triple substitution that saw Antoine Semenyo, whose return to his former stomping ground proved disastrous, Bernardo Silva, surprisingly subdued, and Mateo Kovacic, disappointingly ineffective, all withdrawn. However, none of their replacements managed to inject the necessary spark to turn the tide.

In fact, The Cherries could have secured all three points, as Andoni Iraola’s side, still vying for a Champions League spot, squandered several golden opportunities before Haaland finally found the net with a powerful shot in stoppage time, following a goalmouth scramble.

For City, it was a case of too little, too late. The club now faces an uncertain future without one of football’s most influential and decorated coaches.

Below, we provide our ratings for every City player who featured in this catastrophic evening at the Vitality Stadium…

  • Goalkeeper and defense

    Gigi Donnarumma (7/10):

Although caught off guard by Kroupi’s powerful shot, the Italian international made several critical saves that kept Manchester City’s hopes alive throughout the match.

    Matheus Nunes (4/10):

Bournemouth clearly identified the makeshift right-back as a defensive vulnerability, and it was no surprise that their opening goal originated from his flank.

    Abdukodir Khusanov (5/10):

The Uzbek central defender was a key factor in City’s defensive instability, frequently caught out of position.

    Marc Guehi (5/10):

A challenging evening for the former Crystal Palace player, who often struggled in aerial and ground duels.

    Nico O’Reilly (5/10):

Never truly comfortable in his defensive duties, he also squandered an excellent chance to equalize early in the second half after being played through by Haaland.

  • Publicité
  • Midfield

    Rodri (7/10):

Precise with his distribution, he quickly engineered several opportunities for City and even struck the post just before Haaland’s equalizer. However, the Spaniard wasn’t at his absolute best, as the visitors’ defense was frequently exposed by Bournemouth’s rapid counter-attacks.

    Mateo Kovacic (3/10):

The Croatian delivered a desperately ineffective performance, failing to make an impact defensively and completely absent in attack. He was deservedly substituted in the 55th minute.

    Bernardo Silva (4/10):

Usually a pivotal player for the Citizens, especially in high-stakes matches, the Portuguese star never truly asserted himself and was replaced just before the hour mark.

  • Attack

    Antoine Semenyo (5/10):

He immediately carved out a decent chance for Doku with some clever wing play, then saw a well-placed goal disallowed for offside. His Wembley exploits likely caught up with him, as he was substituted shortly after halftime.

    Erling Haaland (8/10):

Delivered a superb through ball to Semenyo, though the Ghanaian’s timing was slightly off, while another piece of good work from the Norwegian was wasted by O’Reilly. The biggest regret for City is that Haaland was only presented with his first genuine goal-scoring opportunity in injury time – an opportunity he, inevitably, made the most of.

    Jeremy Doku (5/10):

Created space at the edge of the box with a brilliant feint, but his shot towards Petrovic lacked power. He subsequently touched the ball frequently without generating any real threat, and the player who had done so much to keep City’s title dream alive was deservedly substituted with a quarter of an hour remaining.

  • Substitutes and coach

    Rayan Cherki (5/10):

He arguably should have started the match, but the French international failed to turn the tide despite being given over half an hour to do so.

    Phil Foden (5/10):

He seemed to have recaptured his form from the Crystal Palace match last week, but he couldn’t provide the touch of magic City desperately needed as a second-half substitute.

    Savinho (5/10):

Introduced in place of Semenyo on the wing, he proved no more decisive than his predecessor.

    Omar Marmoush (N/A):

Came on for Doku in the final 15 minutes, not enough time to make an impact.

    Pep Guardiola (4/10):

A disastrous evening for the departing tactician: his decision to start Kovacic over Cherki proved unfruitful. Though bold with his halftime substitutions, the Catalan manager ultimately failed to reverse the team’s fortunes. A bittersweet end to his final Premier League title challenge.
