a strategic military training hub taking shape in southern Morocco
Morocco and the United States are advancing a groundbreaking military cooperation initiative with the establishment of the Advanced Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC), set to be built in Tan-Tan. This ambitious project is structured around three core components designed to modernize military capabilities through cutting-edge technology integration and enhanced interoperability between African and Western forces.
three pillars supporting a future-ready defense ecosystem
The AMTEC’s foundation rests on three strategic pillars:
- Multidomain Training Area (MDTA): A state-of-the-art training zone where forces will prepare for complex operations spanning multiple operational domains, including the electromagnetic spectrum. This facility will enable joint exercises with enhanced realism in simulated combat environments.
- Drone Academy (MTDA): A dedicated training hub focused on small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), targeting African operators with specialized programs in counterterrorism operations across West Africa. The academy aims to standardize drone warfare tactics and expand regional security capabilities.
- Innovation and Experimentation Center: A dynamic laboratory for testing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications. The center prioritizes affordable, scalable solutions tailored to African operational realities, ensuring practical and sustainable advancements.
bridging defense and economic development
While the AMTEC’s primary mission is military modernization, its scope extends beyond defense. The project is designed to stimulate an innovation ecosystem by engaging industrial and academic stakeholders. This collaborative approach aims to foster the development of next-generation wireless technologies and detection systems, while also supporting infrastructure growth in remote regions.
General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, emphasized the Kingdom’s readiness to implement this vision swiftly. “Morocco’s existing infrastructure and skilled workforce position the country as a reliable industrial partner, enabling a rapid transition from concept to operational reality,” he noted. The general highlighted the nation’s strategic potential in fostering sustainable defense partnerships with the United States.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, described the initiative as a “major opportunity to accelerate innovation in both African and American defense industries and academic institutions, creating solutions tailored to emerging challenges.”
testing ground for next-gen defense technologies
The AMTEC’s concept will undergo its first real-world validation during African Lion 2027, an annual military exercise hosted in Morocco. This long-standing event has evolved into a premier testing ground for integrating advanced technologies into operational frameworks, providing a critical proving ground for the future center’s capabilities.
The center’s focus on cost-effective, scalable solutions aligns with the practical needs of African defense forces, ensuring that innovations remain accessible and adaptable to local contexts. By combining military training with technological experimentation, the AMTEC is poised to become a model for future defense collaborations in the region.
