Romuald Wadagni sworn in as Bénin's new president

A historic transition has begun in Bénin. Romuald Wadagni, who secured over 94% of the vote in April’s election, was officially sworn in on Sunday, May 24, during a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Cotonou.

At 49 years old, the former Finance Minister now faces a seven-year term with the possibility of renewal. He follows in the footsteps of Patrice Talon, his political mentor, who concluded a decade in office.

Economic continuity and security challenges

In his inaugural address, Wadagni paid tribute to Talon before pledging to deliver tangible economic growth that benefits ordinary citizens. As the architect of Bénin’s recent economic reforms, he now confronts pressing challenges, particularly the rising jihadist threat in the country’s northern regions.

The new president vowed to take a firm stance against security threats while emphasizing the need for strengthened regional cooperation.

Early signs of diplomatic easing

The investiture ceremony also signaled a thaw in relations with neighboring Sahel countries. Niger, which had experienced strained ties with Cotonou, was represented by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, who received a warm welcome during the event.

High-ranking officials from Burkina Faso and Mali were also in attendance, further highlighting the moment’s diplomatic significance.

Wadagni’s first major decisions regarding public freedoms are now under close scrutiny, especially as several NGOs have accused the outgoing administration of tightening political and media restrictions in Bénin.
