Niger and Turkey strengthen ties during landmark ankara visit

The diplomatic and economic ties between Niger and Türkiye reached new heights this week during an official visit by Niger’s Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani, to Ankara. This marked the first overseas trip by the Nigerien leader since assuming office, underscoring the growing importance of the partnership between the two nations.

Key agreements signed to deepen cooperation

At the conclusion of high-level talks at the presidential palace, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdourahamane Tiani formalized several landmark agreements. Among the most significant were a higher education cooperation protocol for 2026–2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), and an accord on managing the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital. A diplomatic cooperation memorandum was also signed, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.

Expanding collaboration across critical sectors

Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted the shared ambition to strengthen ties in defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism to boost business opportunities between Ankara and Niamey, aimed at fostering long-term economic growth for both nations.

The Turkish President reaffirmed his country’s commitment to African nations facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region. He emphasized increased cooperation in military training and intelligence-sharing, stressing that Türkiye’s approach to Africa is built on mutual respect, equal partnership, and reciprocal benefits.

Milestones in bilateral development

Recep Tayyip Erdogan also praised ongoing projects in Niger, including the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, irrigation and rural development initiatives, and educational programs led by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye.

For his part, Abdourahamane Tiani described the relationship as strategically vital for Niger. He traced the deepening ties back to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 2013 visit to Niamey, during which both leaders laid the foundation for today’s robust partnership. The Nigerien President also acknowledged Türkiye’s critical role in supporting Niger’s fight against armed groups in the Sahel, citing Ankara’s contributions to enhancing regional security and stability.
