Olympique Lyonnais (OL) has made an official request to the French Football League (LFP) to postpone its first Ligue 1 match of the season against Toulouse FC, scheduled for August 22. The club cited potential clashes with UEFA Champions League qualifying matches as the reason for the delay. However, the LFP has firmly rejected the proposal.
The Lyon-based side is set to compete in the Champions League third qualifying round, with potential two-legged ties in early August. If they advance further, additional midweek matches could overlap with Ligue 1 fixtures, creating a congested schedule. This request aligns with similar pleas from clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Strasbourg earlier in the year, but the LFP remains firm on maintaining the integrity of the season’s opening day.
LFP prioritizes league schedule stability
The LFP’s decision was confirmed during a Monday evening virtual meeting of its board of directors. The governing body emphasized its commitment to preserving the league’s schedule, particularly at the start of the season. With Ligue 1 set to be fully broadcast on Ligue 1+ for the upcoming campaign, any disruption could impact broadcasting plans and fan engagement.
Under the current ruling, Olympique Lyonnais must navigate between their European commitments and domestic league fixtures. If they qualify for the Champions League playoffs, they will face a challenging task of balancing midweek European matches with their Ligue 1 opener against Toulouse.
