Sénégal’s national assembly president ousmane sonko accepts constitutional council’s decision

Following the significant ruling by the Constitutional Council, which nullified constitutional bill n° 18/2026, the nation keenly awaited the response from Sénégal’s second-highest state official. Ousmane Sonko, the esteemed President of the National Assembly, has now officially addressed the verdict. While setting aside the specifics of the legal debate, the parliamentary leader firmly reiterated his dedication to maintaining institutional order, declaring: “This decision is binding on everyone! We acknowledge it!”

A testament to “democratic vitality”

Far from perceiving this as a challenge or an indicator of institutional instability, the head of the legislative branch chose to adopt a positive outlook, commending the robust functioning of the Senegalese model. For Sonko, this sequence of events serves as clear evidence of the country’s vibrant democratic health.

“In a democracy, when institutions fulfill their roles, each within its designated scope of action, no crisis can possibly emerge,” Ousmane Sonko emphasized, thereby dispelling any concerns about a potential institutional impasse between the executive, legislative, and judicial powers.

Charting a course for future reforms

Looking ahead to upcoming legislative initiatives and promised reforms, the President of the lower house offered reassurance regarding the uninterrupted continuation of parliamentary activities. There is no intention of slowing down the legislative process.

He assured the Senegalese populace that the National Assembly “will continue to fully execute the mission entrusted to it,” before emphatically stating that “laws will be enacted or rejected to honor the commitments made to this courageous and honorable people.” The message is unequivocal: parliamentary work proceeds, strictly adhering to the principles of the republican framework.
