Senegal’s new cabinet formed without pastef-les patriotes representation

Le Premier ministre sénégalais Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô of Sénégal recently announced the formation of a new 30-member government, notably excluding representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite its majority presence in the National Assembly.

This executive restructuring unfolds amid a broader national political realignment, which sees the integration of various technocratic and political figures into the new administration. Hours before the official list was made public, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had already declared that members of his political movement would not be participating in this latest government.

Outlining the new team’s mandate, the Senegalese Prime Minister emphasized that it constitutes a «mission government with an obligation to deliver results». The cabinet is built upon a foundation of both political and technocratic expertise, while also ensuring significant representation for young people and women.

He further clarified that the government’s operational approach would involve a shift in methodology, prioritizing institutional coherence and leveraging the talents of both national experts and the diaspora.

The new governmental structure sees the reappointment of several ministers from the previous administration. These include Cheikh Diba for Economy, Cheikh Niane for Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye for Hydraulics and Sanitation, and Moustapha Guirassy for National Education.

Similarly, other Senegalese officials retaining their portfolios are Ibrahima Sy in Health, Moussa Bala Fofana in Urban Planning, Yankhoba Diémé for Armed Forces, Déthié Fall for Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr for Communication.

This cabinet reshuffle follows the decision by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô steps into the role previously held by Ousmane Sonko, who has since been elected to serve as the President of the Senegalese National Assembly.
