Senegal’s Sonko pushes for bold reforms in Africa’s parliamentary body

The 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) became the stage for a pivotal discussion on the future of continental governance. Senegal’s National Assembly President, Ousmane Sonko, held a high-level meeting this past Thursday with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the APU Executive Committee, to address pressing challenges facing the institution.

The two leaders evaluated the APU’s evolving role amid Africa’s complex political, economic, and security landscape. Sonko underscored the urgent need to overhaul the union’s operational framework, advocating for systemic reforms aimed at enhancing its relevance and decision-making authority on the continent.

Key proposals emerged during the talks, including a push for greater efficiency in governance structures and stronger alignment with the African Union’s strategic priorities. Sonko emphasized that closer collaboration between the APU and AU could amplify the impact of continental policies, ensuring they better reflect the needs of African citizens.

This strategic dialogue reflects a broader movement among African leaders to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and foster a more responsive governance model across the region.
