Stuttgart secures champions league spot after frankfurt draw

The joy of Stuttgart players after securing their Champions League qualification.

VfB Stuttgart has officially clinched its berth in next season’s UEFA Champions League, finishing fourth in the Bundesliga after a captivating 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt this Saturday, May 16.

Thanks to their hard-fought draw on Saturday afternoon in Frankfurt, Stuttgart secured the fourth position in the Bundesliga standings. This crucial result earns them the final German ticket for the upcoming Champions League campaign, joining powerhouses Bayern Munich (1st), Borussia Dortmund (2nd), and RB Leipzig (3rd).

Locked in a fierce battle with Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen for that coveted fourth spot, Stuttgart managed to hold Eintracht Frankfurt to a draw. Sebastian Hoeness’s squad initially took a commanding 2-0 lead, with goals from Chema Andrès in the 10th minute and Nikolas Nartey just before halftime in the 45th minute plus four. However, the hosts mounted a comeback in the second half, with Jonathan Burkhardt converting two penalties to level the score.

With a total of 62 points, the Swabian club successfully outpaced Hoffenheim (61 points), who suffered a 4-0 defeat away at Mönchengladbach, and Bayer Leverkusen (59 points), who were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Hamburg. This achievement marks Stuttgart’s seventh qualification for Europe’s premier club competition, encompassing both the UEFA Champions League and its predecessor, the European Cup.

At the opposite end of the table, the relegation picture became clearer. Heidenheim faced a 2-0 home loss against Mainz, while St. Pauli also fell on their home turf, losing 3-1 to Wolfsburg. Consequently, with 29 points each, both Heidenheim and St. Pauli have been relegated to the second division. Wolfsburg, finishing 16th, will now face a playoff match against the third-placed team from the second division, which could be Elversberg, Hannover, or Paderborn.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, having already secured their 35th German championship title, emphatically defeated Cologne 5-1. The Bavarian giants concluded their Bundesliga season with an impressive tally of 122 goals, with superstar Harry Kane contributing a remarkable 36 league goals (59 across all competitions), including a superb hat-trick in Saturday’s match in the 10th, 13th, and 69th minutes.
