The strengthening of bilateral ties between Togo and the United States took center stage in a high-level meeting centered on local governance, decentralization, and social cohesion. The discussions unfolded during a courtesy visit by Kimberly M. McClure, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Lomé, to the Togolese Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance, and Traditional Affairs.
During the June 2026 meeting in Lomé, both parties explored shared priorities in territorial governance and grassroots development. Key topics included the progress of Togo’s decentralization process, capacity-building for local authorities, and strategies to enhance community cohesion through the involvement of local leaders, traditional chiefs, and civil society actors.

Building stronger local institutions
The Togolese minister outlined the country’s administrative structure and highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at boosting public service efficiency at the territorial level. These efforts seek to bridge the gap between state services and communities, ensuring more responsive and inclusive governance.
U.S. commitment to Togo’s development priorities
McClure reaffirmed Washington’s keen interest in Togo’s local governance dynamics, emphasizing the importance of understanding decentralization challenges to better support the country’s initiatives. The discussions also underscored the need for continued collaboration in addressing regional security concerns, with both sides stressing the critical role of stability and sustainable development in West Africa.
This meeting reflects the robust partnership between Togo and the United States, showcasing their shared dedication to fostering effective local governance and inclusive growth for the benefit of all citizens.
