This advisory comes in response to intensified security measures implemented along routes leading to Modibo Keita International Airport and within various key districts across the city.
According to the embassy’s guidance, Malian authorities have significantly bolstered their security presence throughout the capital. These enhanced protocols include the establishment of additional checkpoints, the erection of roadblocks, and the possibility of temporary closures on certain thoroughfares, all of which could lead to considerable disruptions in traffic flow.
These heightened security protocols are particularly pertinent as they coincide with increased vigilance often observed during religious festivities, such as the upcoming Eid al-Adha (Tabaski) holiday, anticipated around May 27. In light of this, the embassy has advised American citizens to curtail non-essential movement until the end of the month.
The guidelines specifically instruct US citizens to steer clear of areas prone to gatherings or demonstrations and to refrain from attempting to bypass any security barriers. Furthermore, individuals are urged to maintain acute situational awareness of their surroundings and to exercise extreme caution during all domestic travel within the country.
The embassy also strongly recommends a thorough review of personal security strategies, ensuring that communication channels remain effective, and keeping all travel documentation current and readily accessible.
