Major energy milestone: Algeria’s Adjal breaks ground on N’Djamena power plant
The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mourad Adjal, has announced that Sonelgaz International will commence construction of a 40-megawatt power plant in N’Djamena within days. The announcement follows the successful inauguration of the 40MW Algerian-Nigerien solidarity power plant in Niamey, a project that highlights Sonelgaz’s expanding footprint across Africa.
Speaking after the Niamey ceremony—attended by Algerian Prime Minister Mr. Sifi Ghrieb and Nigerien Head of Government Mr. Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman—Mr. Adjal underscored the significance of the Gorou Banda plant as proof of Sonelgaz’s ability to deliver high-impact energy infrastructure within tight deadlines, even beyond Algeria’s borders.
The minister praised the completion of the Niamey project, noting, “This plant demonstrates that Sonelgaz International can execute major energy initiatives across the continent with precision and efficiency.” He also revealed that the company is advancing additional projects in multiple African nations, starting with the upcoming groundbreaking in Chad.
Regional energy ambitions
Mr. Adjal highlighted a growing demand for Sonelgaz’s technical expertise, pointing to interest from several African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. These projects align with broader energy development programs that the company aims to roll out, leveraging its proven track record in rapid project execution and cost optimization.
The minister emphasized Sonelgaz’s role as a catalyst for Algerian public and private sector collaboration in Africa. “Sonelgaz will serve as a driving force for national companies, integrating them into every phase of these projects based on shared value principles. This will strengthen Algeria’s presence and expertise across African energy markets,” he stated.
He also recalled the recent Algeria-Chad agreement, signed in May, to build the N’Djamena plant—a commitment to deepening South-South cooperation under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
