Arsenal crowned champions of England for the first time since 2004 following Manchester City’s stalemate
Held to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening at Bournemouth, Manchester City can no longer overtake Arsenal, who lead the Premier League, on the final day this Sunday. The Gunners have now secured their 14th English championship title.
Twenty-two years after their last triumph, Arsenal has once again ascended to the summit of English football, claiming their 14th league title this Tuesday evening. The Gunners secured the Premier League crown without needing to play their 38th and final matchday, thanks to Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Arsenal’s loyal supporters can extend their gratitude to the surprising Bournemouth squad, expertly guided by manager Andoni Iraola, whose commitment to an attractive, offensive style of play proved decisive.
Led by the exceptional Adrien Truffert, the Cherries effectively denied the Citizens the championship, leaving Arsenal with a five-point lead with just one match remaining. Bournemouth delivered a superb performance, though a late equalizer from Erling Haaland in the 90th + 5 minute offered a fleeting hope for City to snatch a second goal in the dying seconds, potentially bringing them within a point of the Reds and fifth place. For Manchester City, the dream of pushing the Gunners to a remote final-day showdown was shattered just before halftime by a magnificent goal from Eli Junior Kroupi.
Kroupi, expertly set up by a fifty-meter run and a precise pullback pass from Truffert, executed a remarkable right-footed sequence to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a superb strike into the top corner (1-0, 39th minute). Just hours after declining to play in the World Cup for Portugal to focus on his future with the French national team, Kroupi once again left his mark, scoring his thirteenth goal of the season.
Before Bournemouth broke the deadlock, the Citizens had three notable opportunities: a left-footed shot from Jérémy Doku saved by Petrovic (5th minute), a goal disallowed for Antoine Semenyo due to an offside position created by Truffert’s clever movement (12th minute), and a Haaland strike blocked on the line by Evanilson.
Guardiola’s final season regret
City could have taken the lead, but their pressure wasn’t up to the occasion, and Guardiola’s team faltered towards the end of the first half, ultimately conceding Kroupi’s goal. The Citizens returned with renewed intent in the second half, forcing Petrovic to make a crucial save against Nico O’Reilly (46th minute). However, this surge was short-lived, despite the introductions of Savinho, Cherki, and Foden (55th minute).
In fact, Bournemouth created the best chances: Donnarumma parried an Evanilson volley (52nd minute). Rayan struck the Italian goalkeeper’s post (62nd minute), then forced another save (69th minute). David Brooks also hit City’s post (89th minute). Powerless and lacking determination, City clearly failed to deliver when it mattered most, despite Haaland’s stoppage-time goal. But it was far too late to sustain any hope. This result marked the end of their title aspirations. Pep Guardiola will likely depart with this regret, though he will still have secured two national cups in his final of ten seasons at Manchester.
