Arsenal makes decisive move toward Premier League crown
With a Kai Havertz header from a corner, Arsenal secured a comfortable 1-0 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium. As league leaders, the Gunners now stand just one step away from the Premier League title, pending Manchester City’s result at Bournemouth on Tuesday evening.
Mikel Arteta’s side didn’t need to take any risks on Monday night. Playing host to bottom-placed Burnley, Arsenal had one clear objective: collect all three points. A failure to do so would have left their fate in the hands of Manchester City, who were just two points behind the Gunners before kickoff.
True to form this season, Arsenal struck from a set piece. Kai Havertz rose highest to power a header past Max Weiss in the 37th minute, putting the home side ahead. The rest of the match saw Arsenal control proceedings, enjoying a comfortable 62% possession advantage over Burnley, though they rarely threatened to extend their lead.
Havertz nearly received a red card in the 69th minute after making studs-up contact with Lesley Ugochukwu’s calf – a moment that could have derailed Arsenal’s evening.
Now with maximum points secured, Arsenal continue their march toward the club’s first league title since 2004. The Gunners could be crowned champions as early as Tuesday evening if Manchester City fail to win at Bournemouth (8:30 PM kickoff).
Their focus won’t stay solely on domestic glory for long – six days after potentially sealing the title, Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on May 30 at 6:00 PM.
