Sénégal: minister mabouba diagne sues media outlets for defamation

Mabouba Diagne, a prominent minister, has initiated legal proceedings, filing a defamation lawsuit against several media organizations. He contends that these outlets disseminated inaccurate information connecting him to alleged improprieties detailed in a report from the Court of Accounts. This legal action prompts significant discussion regarding press freedom and the accountability of journalists within Senegal.

Mabouba Diagne, who holds the portfolio for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, formally lodged a complaint with the public prosecutor at the High Court of Dakar. The complaint alleges defamation and the dissemination of false news.

The official request has been duly recorded at the prosecutor’s office under the reference number 8815.

Minister’s Allegations

The minister’s grievance stems from various media publications that linked him to alleged irregularities identified in a Court of Accounts report concerning the management of subsidized agricultural equipment. These specific articles reportedly began appearing on Friday, May 15, 2026.

The formal complaint, submitted by his legal counsel Me Khadim Kébé, asserts that certain news organizations disseminated details from a provisional 2025 Court of Accounts report. This report highlighted managerial anomalies within the program, and these outlets, according to the complaint, directly implicated the minister in the cited irregularities.

Diagne maintains that some of these publications deliberately fostered confusion, either by featuring his image prominently in their articles or by suggesting his direct personal involvement in the matters under discussion.

Mabouba Diagne’s Stance

Mabouba Diagne vehemently asserts that these media reports lack any verifiable evidence to substantiate his alleged involvement in any financial impropriety. He further clarifies that the agreements related to the subsidized agricultural equipment, established with the Banque Agricole, were finalized prior to his assumption of ministerial duties.

He emphasizes that the provisional Court of Accounts report itself does not explicitly name him as either responsible for or complicit in any financial irregularities.

Convinced that his reputation and honor have been unjustly tarnished, the minister has chosen to initiate legal proceedings against all individuals responsible for these publications and anyone else implicated. His actions are based on Articles 255 and 258 of the Penal Code, which address defamation and the dissemination of false information.
