Cameroon cracks down on gold sector to fight fraud and boost revenues

The Cameroonian government is stepping up efforts to combat fraud in the gold industry, with strict new controls set to launch on August 1 to strengthen tax collection and customs revenue.

This crackdown aims to address a persistent issue: the gap between reported gold production and actual volumes. Authorities estimate that around 17.17 tonnes of gold were produced in 2025 and 2026, but much of it remains undeclared, costing the state billions in lost tax revenue.

By tightening oversight, the government expects to recover approximately $680 million in tax and customs duties from the sector over the next two years. The initiative targets both licensed and unlicensed mining operations, with officials warning that companies operating without proper authorization will face penalties.

With over 200 companies active in the gold trade, enforcement will focus on verifying production records, tracking supply chains, and ensuring compliance with licensing requirements. The move underscores Cameroon’s determination to maximize revenue from its mineral wealth while clamping down on illicit activities.
