DRC and Egypt strengthen military bonds with new training initiative for Congolese forces
- Security & Defense
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, has directed the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces (FARDC) to develop an implementation plan for training Congolese military personnel in Egypt. This strategic move follows his official visit to Cairo from June 10 to 11, 2026, at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi.
During the high-level diplomatic engagement, both leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation between their nations, rooted in shared histories of sovereignty struggles and African dignity. The discussions emphasized strengthening partnerships focused on development and mutual interests across various sectors.
Military cooperation takes center stage
One of the most significant outcomes of the meeting was the agreement to substantially enhance military cooperation between Kinshasa and Cairo. This includes establishing a comprehensive training program for Congolese soldiers in Egypt. President Tshisekedi specifically tasked the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, in collaboration with the FARDC chief of staff, to finalize the program’s execution plan and submit a detailed implementation strategy.
The initiative comes at a critical time as the DRC continues its efforts to modernize its armed forces and enhance operational capabilities amid persistent security challenges in the eastern regions. These areas face ongoing threats from armed groups, particularly the M23 rebellion operating in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.
The new military cooperation framework reflects both nations’ commitment to practical outcomes that benefit their populations. While enhancing defense capabilities, the program aims to foster stronger institutional ties and knowledge exchange between the Egyptian and Congolese military establishments.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has consistently pursued strategic partnerships with African nations to address its security challenges. This latest agreement with Egypt marks a significant step in strengthening the country’s defense architecture and operational readiness through international cooperation.
