Can 2025 aftermath: Senegal fans still detained in Morocco

The aftermath of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final continues to cast a shadow over Senegal and Morocco, with supporters still facing imprisonment in Rabat. Months after the controversial match—initially won by Senegal in extra time (1-0), then overturned to a 3-0 forfeiture by the CAF Appeals Board—most detained fans remain in custody. While a handful have been released, those who invaded the pitch and clashed with stewards and security forces could face prolonged sentences.

During a televised address, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye addressed the plight of the Lions of Teranga fans, many of whom received sentences ranging from six months to a year. « It would be a mistake to believe we haven’t done enough for our supporters behind bars in Morocco. They have my full support », the president declared, emphasizing the government’s commitment to their cause.

Diplomatic efforts stall as Senegal seeks justice for detained fans

Senegal has exhausted multiple avenues to secure the release of its nationals, including direct appeals to Moroccan authorities. « We must respect the rule of law, but the severity of these sentences is disproportionate and unjust. In similar cases, fines are typically imposed—this goes beyond sportsmanship », President Faye noted, highlighting the unusual harshness of the rulings.

In a bid to resolve the impasse, Senegal’s government has pursued diplomatic channels, including a personal appeal to King Mohammed VI. « I have formally requested His Majesty’s clemency for our detained supporters. We’ve engaged in mediation with all stakeholders and even involved religious mediation… yet the situation remains unresolved », the president explained. Despite these efforts, the legal and political stalemate persists, leaving families and advocates frustrated.
