The energy landscape in Chad is set for a transformative upgrade with the advancement of a cutting-edge 40 MW power plant project in N’Djamena, driven by a strategic collaboration with Algeria’s leading energy giant, Sonelgaz. A high-level delegation led by Sonelgaz International CEO, Yazid Djellouli, recently visited the Chadian capital to finalize technical specifications and operational milestones alongside Tchad-Elec’s leadership team.
At the heart of this initiative lies a tri-fuel power generation system, a pioneering solution that enables the plant to operate seamlessly using natural gas, liquid fuels, or a combination of both. For N’Djamena—where persistent power outages and surging electricity demand strain the grid—the adaptability of this technology is a game-changer. It ensures a steady power supply by allowing real-time adjustments based on fuel availability, whether sourced locally or imported.
Beyond mere power delivery, the partnership embeds a robust knowledge-sharing component. Leveraging Sonelgaz’s decades of experience in managing large-scale energy networks across North Africa, the project includes intensive training for staff from Chad’s National Electricity Company (SNE). This hands-on mentorship aims to empower local engineers with advanced operational and maintenance skills, fostering long-term energy independence and sustainability for Chad’s power sector.
The broader implications for Chad are economic and strategic. By diversifying its energy partnerships and adopting versatile fuel technologies, the country is taking bold steps to curb reliance on expensive fossil fuels while reinforcing grid stability. This development signals a promising shift in Chad’s energy trajectory, positioning reliable electricity as a cornerstone for industrial expansion, economic resilience, and sustainable growth.
