Chad to host african water forum in 2026, addressing continental water challenges
N’Djamena is set to welcome key stakeholders to discuss Africa’s critical water issues at the African Water Forum in July 2026.
The Minister of Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation recently held a press conference to formally announce the upcoming African Water Forum. Titled « From Vision to Action », this pivotal event is scheduled for July 15 and 16, 2026, in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, and will include the notable presence of the World Bank’s resident representative in the country.
During his address, the Minister underscored Chad’s significant wealth in water resources. He highlighted prominent features such as Lake Chad, major rivers like the Chari and Logone, and other vital bodies of water including Lakes Fitri, Léré, Iro, Bahr Aouk, Batha, and Bitéha.
“We also share the extensive Nubian Sandstone Aquifer and various transboundary basins that are crucial for irrigating our sub-region,” the Minister stated. “As a Sahelian nation, we are acutely aware of the challenges associated with water, including climatic pressures, rapid demographic growth, and the fragility of our existing infrastructure. It is precisely because of these critical issues that Chad has sought to be at the forefront of this continental dialogue.”
Hosting this Forum represents a profound vote of confidence from our international partners and a clear commitment from our government to elevate water security to the highest level of our national priorities. Water is far more than just a natural resource; it is a fundamental prerequisite for development, peace, and the resilience of our communities.
The government is steadfast in its resolve to enhance access to potable water and sanitation for all citizens, especially the most vulnerable populations. Furthermore, we aim to expand irrigation systems to bolster our food production security and to manage our shared hydric resources sustainably with our neighbors in the Lake Chad basin and within the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer region.
Regarding the collaboration with the World Bank, the Minister acknowledged the Bank’s renewed dedication and support for Chad. The new project currently under development signifies a crucial step forward, aligning perfectly with our long-term vision for the water sector.
The ‘Water Forward’ initiative, guided by the principles of water for people, water for food, and water for the planet, forms a core component of our national development plan, directly inspired by the political agenda of the President of the Republic.
The Forum is expected to yield concrete outcomes, including national water compacts for participating nations and robust monitoring mechanisms. These measures will ensure that all stakeholders are held accountable for their commitments. Chad stands ready to fulfill its role not only as a gracious host but also as a dedicated and active participant in Africa’s vital water transformation.
