Significant progress in strengthening Sahel health systems

Transformative Health Outcomes in the Sahel

From 2018 to 2024, substantial advancements were achieved in healthcare across fragile communities in the Sahel, particularly within Mali and Mauritania. These initiatives yielded impressive results, detailed as follows:

  • Expanded and Enhanced Health Services: In Mali and Mauritania, fundamental healthcare access was extended to over 5 million individuals, with women constituting half of this population. This achievement substantially exceeded the initial target of 3.65 million beneficiaries. Health centers within designated regions across both nations saw a remarkable uplift in service quality, driven by upgraded facilities, comprehensive staff training, and improved patient management.

  • Maternal Health Services: In conflict-affected areas of Mali, the percentage of expectant mothers attending crucial prenatal visits nearly tripled, rising from 13% to 38%. Simultaneously, Mauritania recorded 160,000 births assisted by skilled health professionals, surpassing the set target by 20%.

  • Pediatric Care and Vaccinations: Mali delivered 1.17 million consultations for children under five, addressing prevalent conditions like malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrhea. Mauritania’s efforts were equally impactful, vaccinating over 200,000 children—three times the original goal—and providing nearly 5 million medical consultations for young children.

  • Nutritional Support Programs: Mauritania successfully provided nutritional assistance to 750,000 women and children, significantly contributing to the fight against malnutrition.

  • Ensuring Access to Care: By the project’s conclusion, 460,000 vulnerable individuals in Mali gained free access to vital health services. In Mauritania, over a million free healthcare services were extended to vulnerable populations, including refugees, with 81% of targeted vulnerable households receiving financial aid to facilitate their access to medical care.

  • Family Planning and Contraception: Mali witnessed a nearly threefold increase in contraceptive use among adolescent girls, rising from 5.8% to 15.3%. In Mauritania, the number of women utilizing modern contraceptive methods surged from approximately 9,000 to over 240,000, significantly exceeding initial projections.
