Congolese ministers defend Ebola response and urge objective assessment of health efforts

During a mission to Bunia in the Ituri province, Patrick Muyaya, the Minister of Communication and Media, advocated for an “objective” evaluation of the Democratic Republic of the Congo‘s actions against the Ebola epidemic currently affecting Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

Government transparency and financial commitment

In a joint briefing, the government spokesperson addressed criticisms from various non-governmental organizations regarding the health crisis. While acknowledging that challenges remain, Patrick Muyaya emphasized that the authorities are operating with transparency and dedication. He noted that the state has prioritized its own resources, contributing 50 million USD to the effort before external aid arrived.

The minister also clarified the nature of international funding. He pointed out that financial support announced by foreign partners, including the United States, is typically directed toward NGOs rather than the national treasury. He urged actors in the field to maintain a sense of collective responsibility and suggested that some criticisms may be motivated by a desire to secure additional funding rather than reflecting the reality on the ground.

Focusing on measurable health outcomes

Minister of Public Health, Roger Samuel Kamba, expressed a preference for focusing on tangible results rather than public controversy. He stated that the success of the health strategy should be measured by specific indicators, such as:

  • The volume of diagnostic tests performed monthly
  • The establishment of specialized treatment centers
  • The deployment of community health workers in affected zones
  • The daily processing of laboratory samples
  • The increasing number of patients who have successfully recovered

He maintained that a final assessment of the response will be possible once the crisis has been fully contained, allowing for a clear view of the work accomplished by all stakeholders.

Context of the Bundibugyo strain

The World Health Organization has designated this outbreak—caused by the Bundibugyo virus—as a public health emergency of international concern. The virus has spread from the DRC into Uganda, a situation complicated by high population mobility, fragile local infrastructure, and security issues in conflict-affected areas.

A significant challenge remains the absence of a licensed vaccine or specific medical treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. Nevertheless, authorities in the DRC remain confident in their ability to manage the situation, drawing on extensive experience gained from sixteen previous Ebola outbreaks that the country successfully mastered.
