Strategic blue economy mission to Mauritius and Seychelles
In a significant move to bolster its maritime sector, Côte d’Ivoire has launched a new phase of South-South cooperation. Between June 10 and 12, 2026, Sidi Tiémoko Touré, the Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources, conducted an official working visit to Mauritius and Seychelles. This initiative is a core component of the national strategy to transform the blue economy into a sustainable engine for job creation and marine resource optimization.
Strengthening ties in Mauritius
The first leg of the mission took place in Mauritius, where Minister Touré met with Arvin Boolell Gosk, the Minister of Agro-industry, Food Security, Blue Economy, and Fisheries. Their dialogue centered on deepening bilateral relations regarding aquaculture, industrial fishing, and the ecological management of oceanic assets.
Mauritian officials expressed a strong commitment to supporting Côte d’Ivoire’s ambitions. This support will manifest through knowledge sharing, specialized training programs, and the development of joint initiatives. Both nations are currently finalizing a memorandum of understanding to provide a formal structure for this burgeoning partnership.
Technical exchanges in Seychelles
The diplomatic tour continued in Seychelles, where the Ivorian delegation explored advanced governance frameworks for the blue economy. Discussions were held with Wallace Cosgrow, the Minister responsible for the sector, along with several technical experts. Key topics included the fight against illegal fishing, the modernization of value chains, and the preservation of fish stocks.
Beyond high-level talks, the mission included on-site inspections of port facilities in Victoria, Providence, and Cascade. The delegation also visited a local hatchery and the Blue Economy Research Institute (BERI) at the University of Seychelles to observe best practices in scientific research and innovation.
Future prospects for marine cooperation
This diplomatic circuit has successfully identified several priority areas for future collaboration, including scientific research, aquaculture development, and enhanced maritime governance. Official protocols are expected to be signed shortly to cement these agreements.
By engaging with these island nations, Côte d’Ivoire is actively integrating successful African models into its own development framework. This mission reaffirms the country’s dedication to a sustainable blue economy built on expert exchange and regional solidarity.
