Local witnesses confirmed that Boko Haram militants targeted a military outpost in the vicinity of N’Guigmi, a garrison town in the Diffa region bordering Lake Chad. The assault occurred at dawn, resulting in significant casualties among the Nigerien security forces.

Local accounts and conflicting reports

A resident of N’Guigmi, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, revealed: “At least ten soldiers were killed in Friday’s attack by Boko Haram near N’Guigmi. There were also casualties among the attackers, and the army has launched clearance operations in the area.”

Another witness, citing social media posts from locals, claimed a higher toll: “Ten military personnel and four national guard members were reportedly killed in the assault.”

The Nigerien News Agency (ANP) confirmed fatalities among the security forces but did not provide specific numbers, stating that “several soldiers lost their lives following an attack by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.” Regional governor General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma attended the soldiers’ burials shortly after the incident.

N’Guigmi has been a hotspot for jihadist activities since 2009, hosting both Boko Haram and ISWAP factions. The vast Lake Chad basin, with its maze of waterways and swamps, has become a safe haven for these armed groups, facilitating cross-border raids into neighboring countries. The insurgency, which originated in northeastern Nigeria, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, gradually spreading to Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.

Regional response and ongoing challenges

The Lake Chad Basin countries have reactivated the Multinational Joint Task Force established in 1994 to combat insurgent threats. In mid-May, Chad conducted airstrikes and ground operations against Boko Haram positions on remote islands in Lake Chad, with support from Nigeria and Niger. However, Niger continues to face jihadist violence in its western regions, perpetrated by groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, amid challenges posed by the current military leadership that took power in July 2023.
