deadly shooting near Mali’s national broadcaster in Bamako
In Bamako this Thursday morning, two young men were fatally shot near the headquarters of Mali’s national broadcaster, ORTM. The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. in a highly secured area that also houses a prominent hotel in the capital.
Military authorities claim the two individuals, riding a motorcycle, attempted to breach security barricades surrounding the ORTM compound. However, conflicting accounts suggest they may have been seasonal workers heading to their construction site.
Residents of the capital are now accustomed to navigating the city’s numerous checkpoints, but opinions are divided on the soldiers’ decision to open fire.
heightened security measures
The checkpoints near the ORTM were established following coordinated attacks by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) against seven locations nationwide, including Bamako. The military had been engaged in intense combat with JNIM fighters in the area.
According to military officials, the two men ignored warning shots fired by guards at the first checkpoint. The soldiers reportedly attempted to halt them before resorting to lethal force.
A local driver, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the risks of entering restricted zones during periods of heightened alert. « Everyone knows this area is off-limits without authorization. If alerts are issued, drivers must stop to avoid trouble. The soldiers were justified in their actions. »
questions over the shooting
Not everyone shares this perspective. Seyba, a Bamako resident, argues that the soldiers could have taken non-lethal measures to subdue the men and question them afterward. « Why not aim for the motorcycle or injure them to force a confession? Now that they’re dead, we’ll never know what really happened. Even if they were suspected militants, this incident leaves too many unanswered questions. »
Local testimonies indicate the two men were seasonal workers en route to their temporary job site and may have acted out of ignorance of the strict security protocols.
In response to the shooting, security around the ORTM has been tightened, along with military camps and Senou International Airport in Bamako. Access is now strictly limited to travelers and authorized personnel.
