DRC Opposition Calls for Felix Tshisekedi’s Resignation and Mass Protest

RDC

Opposition leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo have called for President Felix Tshisekedi’s resignation and a mass protest against proposed constitutional changes that could allow him to seek a third term.

The C64 opposition group, which held a press conference in Kinshasa, declared that it would not back down and urged the population to organize a massive mobilization on July 22 to demand Tshisekedi’s resignation.

‘This march will say no to unconstitutional coup, no to confiscation of people’s sovereignty, no to endless war and bad governance. It will say yes to Constitution respect, peace, justice, and democratic transfer of power,’ said Jean-Marc Kabund, opposition leader.

Tensions between the government and its opponents have been escalating since the parliament, dominated by the ruling party, approved a proposal to extend Tshisekedi’s presidential term.

‘It cannot be about suspending citizen actions or engaging in dialogue until M. Felix Tshisekedi publicly renounces his project for constitutional modification, which divides the nation and threatens the country’s fragmentation,’ added Kabund.

Tshisekedi, 63 years old, has been in power since 2019, with his second and final five-year term set to end in 2028.
