Gabon and EU deepen strategic ties with key talks in Libreville

The Gabonese government and the European Union are set to advance their political collaboration during a high-level meeting in Libreville on 8 June 2026. In preparation for the dialogue, Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault led a preparatory session on 4 June to align national positions ahead of discussions with EU ambassadors accredited in Gabon. This preparatory phase follows the country’s transition into the Fifth Republic, marking a new chapter after the 2024 dialogue held during the transitional period.

Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Marie Edith Tassyla Doumbeneny highlighted key areas of focus for the talks, including governance, democracy, sustainable forest management, regional cooperation, and economic prospects. She emphasized that the dialogue would also assess the full scope of Gabon-EU relations, covering institutional frameworks and bilateral partnerships with EU member states.

four strategic priorities shaping future cooperation

The joint communiqué outlines four core themes for this second session of the Gabon-EU Political Dialogue, aligned with the Samoa Agreement. These priorities include political reforms, governance, and the rule of law; economic growth, investment climate, and business environment; sustainable natural resource management and energy transition; and regional cooperation, peace, and security. The meeting aims to review progress, tackle shared challenges, and unlock new opportunities in key sectors.

Vice-President Immongault described the dialogue as a vital exercise in national sovereignty and economic diplomacy. He stressed the importance of advocating Gabon’s national priorities within a partnership he described as promising. Grounded in dialogue, mutual trust, and respect, the session is expected to conclude with a joint communiqué outlining the main cooperation guidelines for the coming years.
