Gabon has shifted from confrontation to collaboration in its approach to social media regulation, engaging TikTok in direct talks on compliance with national digital laws. The breakthrough came during the AI for Good / WSIS summit in Geneva, where Gabon’s Minister of Digital Economy, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, held strategic discussions with TikTok’s regional leadership to assess progress on the platform’s adherence to Gabon’s updated regulatory framework.
This dialogue follows months of intensified scrutiny over digital platform governance in Gabon. Key topics included safeguarding users—especially minors—against harmful content and ensuring TikTok’s alignment with Gabon’s recently enacted social media laws. The platform’s regional team, led by Emir Gelen (Regional Director for Government Relations in the Middle East, Eurasia, and Africa) and Maria Cohn (Deputy Director of Government Relations), presented a comprehensive quarterly moderation report covering the first three months of 2026.
TikTok’s data reveals a rigorous enforcement effort: 23,504 sensitive posts were removed, including 13,930 targeting minors’ safety and 10,784 related to regulated goods or services. The most severe violations involved sexually explicit content, abuse imagery, and physical harm depictions targeting children. The platform also highlighted its upgraded moderation tools, boasting a 99.8% pre-user-report removal rate—with 92.9% blocked before any views—and a 97.2% takedown rate within 48 hours of detection.
Among the enforcement actions, 4,352 accounts were permanently suspended during this period. Both parties agreed to extend their partnership for another year, aligning with Gabon’s compliance timeline under its social media regulation ordinance.
Minister Doumba emphasized the need to balance innovation with citizen protection, stressing Gabon’s priorities: combating misinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and content threatening youth mental health. The meeting underscored Gabon’s commitment to enforcing local laws while fostering a safer, more responsible digital ecosystem for its citizens.
