Morocco’s Role in Securing Sebta Against Terrorism

A recent report by Spanish intelligence services highlights the crucial role Morocco has played in preventing a planned terrorist attack on Sebta.

According to the report, published in the Moroccan daily newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, Morocco’s security cooperation with Spain has been instrumental in preventing a bloody conflict in Sebta.

The report notes that the city has once again become a hub for counter-terrorism efforts, particularly against jihadist terrorism, resulting in several arrests last week in the city center.

Sebta’s strategic location as a gateway to Europe from North Africa makes it a sensitive area for Spanish security forces.

A recent anti-terrorism operation in Sebta revealed a more complex threat, unlike traditional cells, due to the use of online platforms for propaganda, recruitment, and funding.

Between 2012 and June 23, 2026, Spanish authorities recorded 458 anti-terrorism operations, resulting in the arrest of 816 individuals linked to jihadist ideology. During the same period, Sebta witnessed 19 anti-terrorism operations, with 40 people arrested.

These operations are a testament to the fruitful cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan security services, which closely monitor terrorist networks and play a key role in Sebta’s security.
