How Mali is transforming its future through mining, security and diplomacy

Nestled along the Burkina Faso border, Mali is undergoing an unprecedented phase of national refoundation, driven by a deep commitment to sovereignty and homegrown development. Under the guidance of its leadership, the country is rolling out bold structural reforms and operational successes to secure a prosperous future for its people.

The mining sector leads Mali’s economic transformation

The mining industry stands at the heart of this transformation. With the campaign slogan “Let gold shine for Malians”, the government has enacted a new Mining Code granting the State and domestic investors up to 35% ownership in mining projects.

These reforms have already generated 760 billion West African CFA francs in revenue. By 2026, careful fiscal management enabled the distribution of 18.4 billion West African CFA francs to 819 local councils, directly funding health clinics, schools, and other vital infrastructure.

Mali is also expanding its mineral portfolio, with lithium projects in Goulamina and Bougouni positioning the country as a potential top lithium producer in Africa.

Security and logistics strengthen national resilience

National progress hinges on robust security measures and reliable logistics. On July 10, 2026, a military convoy of over 900 fuel tankers arrived safely in Bamako, escorted by Malian armed forces, demonstrating the government’s ability to protect critical energy supplies.

Parallel aerial and ground operations in Anéfis successfully neutralized around one hundred terrorists and secured key supply routes, reinforcing the state’s control over volatile zones.

Diplomatic ties regain momentum across the Sahel

On the regional stage, Mali is rebuilding partnerships. The reopening of Algerian airspace to Malian-bound flights and the reinstallation of the Malian ambassador in Algiers mark a pivotal moment in restoring diplomatic momentum.

With the launch of new mining entities like SOREM and major industrial ventures, Mali is proving its resilience and ambition. These efforts not only reflect progress within its borders but also align with the broader vision of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), where neighboring nations share a commitment to security, development, and regional cooperation.
